One Person Dead, One Woman Rescued at San Diego-Tijuana Border – NBC Los Angeles

SAN DIEGO, California – One person was killed and another was rescued after trying to cross a border fence that stretches into the ocean between the United States and Mexico south of San Diego on Tuesday, an official said.

Jose Ysea, a San Diego public safety spokesman, said around 8 a.m. a woman and another person tried to cross the border fence between Border Field State Park and Playas de Tijuana, Mexico.

The San Diego Fire and Rescue Department (SDFD) and several local and federal agencies on both sides of the border responded to the emergency call that a woman would have been stuck in the border fence that divides the area of ​​Playas de Tijuana and the Border Field State Park.

“At this point, it looks like they tried to climb because the woman was trapped on top of the fence when rescuers from Tijuana rescued her. It was lucky they were there and close enough to provide that rescue,” Ysea said. Since she added that the Imperial Beach lifeguards are a good distance from the area.

“An example of the cooperative effort of all our security resources in the area,” added Ysea.

Imperial Beach lifeguards, who responded to the scene by boat, brought the woman to shore on the US side, Ysea said. She was medically evaluated but she refused to go to the hospital.

However, the Tijuana lifeguards, who identified the woman as 25-year-old Adriana, clarified to TELEMUNDO 20 that the woman was not trying to cross the border, she was just enjoying a morning on the beach with a man.

Rescuers added that they swam from Playas de Tijuana to San Diego to rescue Adriana.

THEY FOUND A DEAD PERSON ON THE COAST

During the rescue, San Diego lifeguards also found a second person in the sea during the rescue. Moments later it was confirmed that this person was pronounced dead at the scene, said Ysea, a spokeswoman for the city of San Diego.

The body of this second person had been washed up 100 feet north of the beach shoreline on the US side.

So far the identity of the victim is unknown.

San Diego lifeguards came to the rescue of a woman at the border at Border Field State Park on May 31, 2022.

According to an SDFD spokesperson, the Border Patrol and Coast Guard assisted in rescuing the lifeguards after the report came in around 8:05 a.m.

Telecopter 20 video showed more than a dozen rescue team members on the beach near Border Field State Park around 8:45 a.m. Just after 9 a.m., a helicopter landed on the beach to assist in the rescue efforts.
