Only in Middelkerke no blue flag yet: “Beach must meet a lot of criteria”

The Blue Flag is an international quality label for sustainable tourism and sustainable recreation. Beaches, swimming ponds and marinas can receive such a Blue Flag. On our coast there are now 27 blue flag beaches. Only none is flying in Middelkerke. Not because the water quality is bad, it has even improved, but because a number of criteria still need to be checked.

“To get such a Blue Flag, it is not only the water quality that is important,” says Simon Reijniers of Blue Flag. “The beach must meet a lot of criteria. There must be rescuers, for example, there must be a first aid post, there must be a place where you can sort your waste, and so much more.”
