The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution on the situation in the Kerch Strait, RIA Novosti reports.
The text of the document states that the Assembly urges the Russian Federation to immediately release the Ukrainian military and provide them with medical assistance and the necessary legal and / or consular assistance, in accordance with the applicable provisions of international humanitarian law, in particular, the Geneva Conventions.
In addition, PACE recommended that Russia and Ukraine refrain from any measures that could aggravate the conflict and jeopardize security throughout the region and exacerbate legal disputes between Ukraine and the Russian Federation.
The Ukrainian delegation wanted to amend the resolution to consider detained seamen as “prisoners of war”, but this word was not included in the final version of the document.
Note that the Russian delegation did not participate in the session of the assembly. On January 17, the State Duma of the Russian Federation announced its refusal to send a delegation to PACE. Also, the parliamentarians decided not to transfer the contribution in 2019 to the budget of the Council of Europe.
Recall, on November 25, three ships of the Ukrainian Navy violated the border of the Russian Federation. Russian border guards detained Ukrainian ships and brought them to Kerch, a criminal case was opened following the violation of the state border of the Russian Federation. On January 16, the Lefortovsky Court of Moscow decided to extend until April 24 the term of detention for all Ukrainian sailors involved in the incident on the Kerch Strait.
