Palm winner Mungiu on “a very violent species”

Cannes (AP) – The Romanian director Cristian Mungiu has highlighted the violence of humanity with a view to the war in Ukraine.

“We are a very, very violent species of animals,” said the 54-year-old on Sunday in Cannes. “And we need very, very little to identify the other as an enemy, and you can see that in the Ukraine war right now.”

Mungiu won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2007 with his feature film «4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days». He has also already received the Director’s Prize («Bacalaureat», 2016). This year he is again represented in the competition with «RMN». The film takes place in a Transylvanian village with different ethnic groups. When a few workers from Sri Lanka come to the village, racist protests and violence are triggered by many residents.

“People need 24 hours and someone to tell them that the people across the room are enemies, and then they will feel no guilt for raping, torturing or killing people who were neighbors yesterday.” said Mungiu.
