He is the only one to have won three world championships and is the youngest player and scorer in a final: The Brazilian football magician Pelé set these records and more.
Football enthusiasts from all over the world still adore Edson Arantes do Nascimento alias Pelé.
Netflix is now honoring the exceptional kicker with a documentary of the same name. He shows his perfectionism and the mythical status he achieved. In addition to interviews with Pelé, which have never been shown before, «Pelé» also presents numerous archive material and interviews with some of his famous teammates such as Jairzinho and Rivellino.
The focus is on the twelve extraordinary years in which Pelé, the only player who has ever won three world championships, developed from a young superstar in 1958 to a national hero in 1970, a radical and turbulent period in Brazil.
For a long time, Pelé held the top scorer record. He scored 643 goals for his club Santos. But at the end of 2020 Lionel Messi overtook him. The Argentine had set himself the goal of replacing Pelé as the top scorer. He succeeded.
Pelé is not only shown as a superstar, the documentary also illuminates another side. Namely his unrevocable role during the military dictatorship, as «Spiegel.de» writes in a critical article.
“Pelé” will also cast a spell over those viewers who don’t know much about football.
“Pelé” runs on Netflix.
