Having a pet in the home is a great decision, as science has shown that the company of a cat or a dog it has several advantages.

These animals, which quickly become part of the family, have a great capacity to show love and appreciation towards their masters.

1. Encourage children

The little ones in the house will be very happy if they have a pet by their side. In the same way, animals can bring great benefits to their development.

According to a study by the ‘Affinity Foundation’ on the bond between people and companion animals, pets reinforce minors’ sense of responsibility. The first concepts that most children associate when asked about their relationship with their dog or cat are: “take care”, “feed” and “play”.

In addition, the pet serves as a stabilizer of children’s behavior as it helps to promote joy and eliminate sadness or normal childhood fears.

According to the aforementioned study, for 46 percent of children their pet is perceived as the main source of emotional support after their parents. On the other hand, 50 percent of them associate it with their “companion of activities and games”, coming to prefer to play with the animal instead of using video games.

2. Relieves stress

Pets help relieve daily stress. Walking the dog or petting the cat can cause people to tune out and release more oxytocin, known as the ‘love hormone’.

According to a study conducted by researchers at Washington State University in the USA, and published in the journal ‘AERA Open’, petting cats and dogs “provides momentary stress relief.”

Research showed that people who interacted for 10 minutes with cats and dogs showed significantly lower salivary cortisol levels compared to those who did not.

It is worth noting that salivary cortisol is produced mainly during times of stress and high tension.

3. Improves health

Having an animal at home helps people be more active and even exercise more. Studies have shown that a dog and a cat at home can bring great health benefits.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (CDC, for its acronym in English), “walking regularly and playing with pets can lower blood pressure, levels cholesterol and triglyceride levels ”.

4. Relieves the feeling of loneliness

Some research has found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and improve mood. The CDC maintains that “they can help control loneliness and depression by keeping us company.”

A pet is highly recommended for people who are alone or suffer from depression or disorders related to lack of sociability.

An investigation by the Florida State University (FSU), in the US, examined the symptoms of depression and loneliness in people over 50 who experienced the loss of their partner and found that those who did not have pets suffered further increases significant depression than those who did.

5. Improve social life

Companion animals also help their owners to interact with other people because they often help them with their social skills.

Universities such as Ohio, Missouri and the Australian National Heart Foundation conducted independent studies and concluded that pet owners have higher self-esteem and tend to be less fearful and more outgoing.

In addition, research published by the ‘American Heart Association’, determined that people who take their pet for a walk have 54 percent more energy in the day. All these benefits lead to a better social life.
