Get up to date with „Matisse in the 1930s“ at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and “Modigliani Up Close” at the Barnes Foundation, two exhibition premieres are eagerly awaited. Both exhibitions will be on view in Philadelphia through the end of January 2023. With “Disney100: The Exhibition” the city is facing another world premiere in spring 2023.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is hosting a special exhibition through January 29, 2023 Henri Matisse, one of the most important representatives of classical modernism. Entitled Matisse in the 1930s, it is dedicated to a decade in the artist’s life that is considered a pivotal decade in his career, but has never before been the subject of a standalone exhibition. More than 100 works are on display, including well-known and rarely presented paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, illustrations, documentary photographs and films. Philadelphia was deliberately chosen as the venue, for it was a visit in 1930 as part of a commissioned work for the Barnes Foundation that inspired Matisse’s new creative approach, which is evident in the later works of this exceptional artist. The exhibition was created in collaboration with the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris and the Musée Matisse in Nice – two other museums deeply connected to Matisse and who will present “Matisse in the 1930s” to their audiences in France in 2023.

The exhibition will be on view in Philadelphia from October 16, 2022 to January 29, 2023. dr Albert C.
