Poland’s national electric car has clear outlines. It will have Chinese technology like Volvo

Almost two years ago, the Poles first helped with the project of a national electric car named after the Jizera Mountains – Izera. At that time, they were looking for a strategic partner whose technology the Italian-designed cars could use. There was speculation about Volkswagen or Hyundai, but in the end, eyes turned towards China. The upcoming electric cars will have a platform from Geely.

The Chinese owner of Volvo, Lotus or co-owner of Smart will deliver its SEA modular platform under license to the Polish automaker EMP, which stands for ElectroMobility Poland. It is not some outdated technology, the basis for electric cars appeared for the first time only last year, and it is used in various forms by the new Smart #1, electric SUV Lotus Eletre, and the upcoming electric cars from Volvo will also have it.

However, the Izera should become the first car outside the Chinese concern to receive the SEA platform. In the press release, the Poles emphasize its modularity and ability to cover segments from the smallest cars to the upper middle class and vans, in other words with a wheelbase from 1800 to 3300 mm. However, the press release does not mention whether EMP will manufacture the platform itself in the upcoming factory in Jaworzno, Silesia, where it will employ 2,400 people. However, Geely will also be a technological partner of the Polish side, at least for the first cars.

In any case, the first car under the Izera brand will be (according to the original plans already in 2024) a compact SUV, the white prototype of which also appears in the photos. Next to it, the Poles promise the production of a compact hatchback, which is a red prototype for a change, and what is most interesting: also a compact station wagon.

This will be another electric alternative to the Octavia in a relatively short period of time. It is already produced today under the number 5 by the Chinese MG, and an electric version of the Peugeot 308 SW or the Opel Astra Sports Tourer is also planned.

On the Izera website, other snippets from the technology of the upcoming electric cars also appear. For example, the automaker guarantees acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds and a range of approximately 440 kilometers per charge. In addition, the cars are to be equipped with features such as emergency braking, blind spot monitoring or road sign reading.

The Italian studio Torino Design is behind the exterior appearance, and although it is a Polish national car that is also financed by the Polish government, many components come from foreign companies: in-house development would not be as fast and efficient. In addition to Geely, EDAG is one of the main partners. However, the head of EMP Piotr Zaremba said that the use of the Chinese platform of the car manufacturer will allow significant involvement of local suppliers in the entire process of production and development of the car in the longer term.

Let us remind you that the company ElectroMobility Poland was established in 2016 and was founded by four energy companies Enea, Energa, PGE and Tauron. They are at least partly owned by the state, each of them holding 25 percent of the Polish car company.
