Police Guarantee Safe April 11 Demo, Commander Asks Officials Not to Be Repressive

Polda Metro Jaya ensure student demonstration which was held on Monday (11/4) today will run safely and under control.

Initially, the demonstration will be held in front of the Presidential Palace, Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara, Central Jakarta. However, the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) finally stated that the demonstration was held at the DPR Building on Jalan Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta.

“Polda Metro Jaya will maintain the security of the capital well,” said Head of Public Relations of Polda Metro Jaya Kombes E Zulpan to reporters, Sunday (10/4).

Even though there were demonstrations, said Zulpan, the police appealed to the public to continue their activities as usual.

Meanwhile, the participants of the demonstration are advised to be orderly, not to interfere with other community activities, and not to damage public facilities.

“We are in the holy month of Ramadan, let us keep the sanctity of this month full of grace with good deeds,” said Zulpan.

“Polda Metro Jaya will provide services and security for the planned demonstration on 11″ [April],” added Zulpan.

Separately, the TNI Commander General Andika Perkasa supported the statement by the Chairperson of the DPD RI AA La Nyalla Mahmud Mattalitti who asked the security forces not to be repressive in dealing with student actions, including the action plan of the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) which was held today, Monday (11/13/2020). 4).

Previously, La Nyalla explained that student aspirations were an unstoppable current. The six demands submitted by the students were the voices of the common people.

“These younger students are channels for the people’s voice. It must be respected and well received,” he said.

Therefore, he also reminded the security forces that freedom of expression must be properly facilitated. He admitted that he had communicated with the National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit and asked the police not to act repressively.

“I have called the National Police Chief directly, I ask the police not to be repressive towards demonstrations expressing opinions and attitudes,” he said.

For information, today in Jakarta, the All-Indonesian Student Executive Board (BEM SI) will hold a demonstration against the extension of the presidential term.

There are at least four demands that students will make in the action, the most important of which is to urge and demand representatives of the people not to betray the state constitution by amending the 1945 Constitution, and to be firm in rejecting the postponement of the 2024 election or a three-term presidential term.

Student actions with similar demands were also carried out in several other areas in Indonesia. Some of them are in Palembang (South Sumatra), in front of the Bogor Palace (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Makassar (South Sulawesi), to Ambon (Maluku).
