Popular on social media, but complaints rain… Construction site cafe eventually demolished

A cafe that opened in a building under construction ended up shutting down after controversy.

On the 22nd, a cafe opened in a building under construction in Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul. Due to safety concerns, the steel pipe scaffolding surrounding the building (temporarily installed for construction at high places) was removed on the 30th. .

This is a measure following an on-site inspection in Seodaemun-gu on the 26th. This cafe went beyond the ‘construction site concept’ and opened at the site ahead of the actual construction, drawing a lot of attention on the Internet and social networking services (SNS).

Originally, this building was a multi-family house, and the cafe side purchased it to operate it as a brad showroom in the future. With the wallpaper and flooring on the 1st and 2nd floors removed, it was temporarily operated as a cafe until the interior construction began in earnest three months later.

A ‘construction site concept’ cafe refers to a cafe where pipes and wires are exposed inside the building without using finishing materials such as wallpaper or tiles.

However, the gaze of citizens looking at the cafe was as great as their interest. As civil complaints continued, on the 26th, Seodaemun-gu conducted an on-site inspection centered on the Department of Health and Hygiene and the Department of Architecture and recommended the removal of external scaffolding and internal iron stairways between the 1st and 2nd floors, which pose a risk of safety accidents.

Under the current law, cafes only check whether there are kitchen facilities inside the establishment, hygiene management, and food storage conditions in accordance with the Food Sanitation Act, but do not separately check the air quality or the internal structure of the building. An official from Seodaemun-gu explained, “If there are no abnormalities in the reporting documents, we can operate.”
