On Friday, the 20th, the Municipality of Santarém, through the Municipal Secretary of Health (Semsa), through the Epidemiological Surveillance and the Technical Health Surveillance Center (NTVS), carried out an active search for cases of malaria in Aldeia São Pedro, located on the Santareno plateau. The following actions were carried out: spraying in homes, health guidelines and distribution of mosquito nets.

The purpose of the active search for asymptomatic cases of malaria is the prevention and control of the disease, exposing individuals who participate in its transmission chain to treatment.

Malaria is not a contagious disease, that is, a sick person cannot transmit the disease directly to another person, it is necessary the participation of a vector, which in this case is the female Anopheles mosquito (nail mosquito), infected by Plasmodium , a type of protozoan. These mosquitoes are more abundant at twilight times, that is, at dusk and dawn. However, they are found biting throughout the night, but in smaller numbers.

The NTVS coordinator, Marcelino Xavier, explains that “malaria is a disease that can be cured and the treatment is effective, simple and free. However, the disease can evolve into its severe forms if it is not diagnosed and treated in a timely and adequate manner. That is why these active search actions are so important so that we can monitor cases and take all the public power apparatus to fight the disease “
