Manchester United and Chelsea lost several players to injury this Saturday afternoon, in addition to losing to Villa and City.
Manchester United and Chelsea both suffered defensive injuries on the Premier League’s final matchday. Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Reece James missed 90 minutes for their respective clubs on Saturday.
Two England international full-backs had to be replaced before half-time as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Thomas Tuchel were forced to make tactical adjustments, while Maguire had to come out after the break.
The Red Devils and Blues will now await updates from their medical departments regarding the severity of the nuisance shocks. Solskjaer and Tuchel both preferred to remain cautious after the game when asked about their players.
Not to miss
“Sorry, I can’t give you any news, explained the United boss. We’ll have to use it today, tomorrow, and Monday, or when we’re done with the scans, and see how they go. “
Tuchel, meanwhile, told reporters: “I don’t know about Reece right now. He twisted his ankle and it was very painful for him. I have no further news from him at this point but we’ll see how he is in the next few. days.”
Shaw had played every minute of United’s 2021-22 Premier League campaign ahead of the home game against Aston Villa. That total is now over, with the 26-year-old complaining of a muscle problem during his last outing.
Shaw had a rough afternoon before being substituted with Matty Cash giving him plenty of trouble, and the Red Devils left-back was shown a yellow card for a clumsy tackle.
Five minutes after receiving this warning, he was forced to leave the pitch. With only 34 minutes on the clock, it became apparent that Shaw was unable to continue and had to be replaced by Diogo Dalot.
A Shaw international colleague also had a frustrating home outing. Reece James was the titular right-back for Tuchel’s side in a heavyweight clash with Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
However, he held on for less than half an hour before his manager was forced to make a change. Following a collision with Jack Grealish, James hit the ground several times before relinquishing his seat with an ankle problem.
His place was taken by Thiago Silva, while Cesar Azpilicueta finished the game on the right flank.
Finally, the United captain received treatment on the sidelines following a clash with Tyrone Mings early in the second half but returned to the pitch. However, what appeared to be just a blow to the shin eventually forced Maguire off the pitch after 67 minutes, with Victor Lindelof coming on to replace him.
Solskjaer hopes the news from the infirmary will be good, with the change looking more like risk management than anything else.
