Comparing electric and internal combustion cars, the experts revealed that it is not worth buying for such a car – it depends on the distance traveled, charging stations and the price of electricity.
With fuel prices rising sharply, electric cars are attracting more and more interest, but the question arises as to how long such a car will pay off and how much the cost of charging it differs from the price of fuel.
According to the interviewees, it is most profitable to buy an electric car if you drive up to 200 km a day and have the opportunity to charge it at home or at work. They reveal that the best option is their own power plant and charging station, which costs up to 2 thousand. euros.
At the moment, however, electric car prices are rising unpredictably because, according to interlocutors, the supply chain is stalled, so demand is much higher than supply.
Pays off in 4 years
Paulius Gūžys, the head of Įkrautas, calculates that 100 km with an internal combustion engine uses more and less up to 8 l of petrol, which is about 16 euros. An electric car consumes 20 kW per 100 km (1 kW is about 0.25 euros), so it costs about 5 euros. P. Gūžys summarizes that driving 100 km on fuel alone saves 11 euros.
He adds that, for example, driving 100 thousand. km with an electric car already saves about 11 thousand. “And not to mention free parking here, for example in Vilnius, in the blue zone, where an hour costs 2.5 euros. Also in addition to the annual regular maintenance, which the electric car does not need in principle: change of lubricants, fuel filters, oil filters, etc. ”.
The interlocutor emphasizes that the risk of damage to the internal combustion engine is much higher on the mechanical side, as internal combustion cars have about 30 thousand. moving parts, and electric cars only about 300.
“These costs are difficult to estimate because they depend on the model. But the owners of electric cars would save here as well, ”says P. Gūžys.
According to him, currently the price of the electric car “Volkswagen ID.3” is about 40 thousand. EUR 25-30 thousand for new similar internal combustion. EUR, so on average over 100 thousand. km electric car pays off in 4 years.
Much is determined by the price of electricity
Electric car enthusiast Dainius Jakas points out that the price of driving an electric car depends on the price of electricity. According to him, there are people who still have a 10 ct rate, then those who pay 30 ct each, and there are those who pay 59 ct per 1 kW. For the latter, 100 km with an electric car would cost about 12 euros, which would be almost the same as gasoline or diesel.
For those who pay 30 ct for electricity, a 100 km electric car would cost about 6 euros, and if you have a good old plan of 10-15 ct, it would cost only 3-4 euros per 100 km.
The interviewee says that in 2016. when sitting in an electric car, he paid less than 2 euros per 100 km, because the electricity at home cost 10 ct per 1 kW.
“Going 25 thousand a year alone. km saved € 1,200 on fuel prices at the time. Consequently, the savings would be higher today. The price of a similar car for an electric car and an internal combustion engine differs by 3–4 thousand. EUR 3–4 thousand. I really bought back the euro in 2-3 years. 2016 there was still a lot of free infrastructure that is still there but is being charged.
This is the 6th year I still have used the bonuses, which will diminish over time as the number of electric cars increases. Also, the service of the electric car is very minimal: there are no spark plugs, clutches, diskers, pumps, belts, filters that need to be repaired, ”the enthusiast shares.
I will not drive to Palanga
Mr. Gūžys admits that so far the electric car is intended only for trips in the city or for people who travel up to 200 km a day. According to him, if this distance is not exceeded during the day and there is a possibility to charge the car at home or at work every day or every other day, the electric car really pays off.
However, if a person travels 250-300 km or more per day, inconvenience may be required as public charging stops would have to be sought. Mr. Gūžys says that although this structure is expanding, today it is not yet wide enough for people to load a car anywhere and anytime.
“My dad travels about 400 km a day and everything is fine – he loads the public infrastructure, which he finds, but additional planning appears. If you stop for lunch, you have to arrange where to load the car. But for those who travel short distances, there is no need to plan – in the morning you left with a charged car, and in the evening you returned with a low battery, turned on the charge overnight and in the morning you drive again, ”says the interlocutor.
And D. Jakas jokes that the main question of everyone about electric cars is whether he goes to Palanga. According to him, the main disadvantage of this car is the distance – few electric cars would travel that distance. According to the interviewee, for most people who go to work, shop, school, this car is really suitable. But for those who travel between cities on a daily basis, it is definitely not suitable.
D. Jakas reveals that the only way out if the car is unloaded is a trawl, because the manufacturer of electric cars does not allow the cars to be towed.
He adds that as with fuel delivery, it can also deliver a generator that can charge the car minimally enough to drive to the nearest stop. But charging is slow – the generator charges 1 kW per hour. The interlocutor advises counting the kilometers and watching somewhere on the go to make sure there is enough energy to reach the target and stay a little longer.
The electric car enthusiast notes that people’s attitudes towards charging should change, as the charging speed drops if the car is loaded like a mobile phone – back in the evening, charging at night, in the morning – already full.
According to the interlocutor, this question is relevant only when traveling: “Only those like me travel with an electric car, others do not make such nonsense as driving an electric car from Lithuania to Spain. People fly such distances! But anything is possible, it is important how you are in the mood, ”laughs the interviewee.
Jak assures that if there is no way to charge the car at home or there is expensive electricity, the question is whether such a car would pay off, because charging at stops will never be cheap, and the stops need to be in a convenient location, running and not waiting in line.
He does not hide that there are too few loading stops in Lithuania, but according to him, it is a question of the chicken and the egg – first of all: do you need to install more stops for people to buy electric cars, or will people have to buy more electric stops first . He cites the example of Norway: with the advent of many electric vehicle energy suppliers and operators, they have delivered a bunch of stops: “Business will definitely not miss an opportunity if the need arises.”
“Fuel” can be made by yourself
D. Jakas reveals that the issue of pollution is not the most important thing for him when driving an electric car. He says he looks at this thing globally and politically:
“I can’t get oil in the yard, ie diesel or petrol, which means that I’m dependent on gas and oil taps from Russia or other Arab countries when driving a car with an internal combustion engine. It shows that my state is also dependent on them. Last year, I made all the electricity I used at home and while driving an electric car myself. It was quite an expensive initial investment, but it’s wonderful to produce electricity yourself and drive it without buying oil from uncertain sources and without paying money where you don’t want to. ”
The enthusiast believes that it is very important for Lithuania to promote the introduction of electric cars, solar power plants and alternative energy, because there is no oil in Lithuania, so the country is dependent on oil and gas suppliers, whatever they may be.
P. Gūžys reveals that installing an electric car charging station in a house or cottage would cost 1500–1800 euros: “This is the price of the whole process from start to finish, including project adjustments, station, installation materials, works, etc.”.
According to him, it would be more expensive to install the station next to the apartment building, because the longer distances, the project would have to be coordinated with the responsible people, so the price would be about 2 thousand. euros.
