Richard Carapaz has further extended his lead at the 102nd Giro d'Italia at the end of the second week. The first Ecuadorian in the Maglia Rosa finished fifth on Sunday in the 15th section over 232 kilometers from Ivrea to Como and increased after a fall of top favorite Primoz Roglic the distance to the Slovenians to 47 seconds. Old star Vincenzo Nibali also moved closer to Roglic. The day's victory went to the Italian outliers Dario Cataldo in front of his compatriot Mattia Cattaneo.
Until the last climb, the favorites were together before there were rows of attacks. It had Roglic in an attack by Carapaz and Nibali demolished. The gap widened further as the former ski jumper crashed on the descent and could barely keep to the guardrail.
Carapaz had taken the overall lead on Saturday with his second stage victory. In the points classification, the Frenchman Arnaud Démare is ahead of Giro debutant Pascal Ackermann.
It continues on the Giro on Tuesday with the queen stage over 194 kilometers from Lovere to Ponte di Legno, although the 2618 meter high Gavia Pass had to be taken out of the program because of avalanche danger. High snow walls pile up along the track and ice slipper would have threatened on the descent. Before the second day of rest waits on Monday.
