Purdue Pharma reaches new billion-dollar settlement over addictive painkiller: owners put even more money on the table

Purdue Pharma, the producer of the addictive painkiller OxyContin, faced no fewer than 3,000 lawsuits. The company subsequently declared bankruptcy.

To avoid prosecution, Purdue Pharma and its owners, the immensely wealthy Sackler family, had entered into a multi-billion dollar settlement with nearly every US state and a slew of local governments. In return, the family received protection from further legal action.
