Awesome codeThe Queen’s lipstick sent a secret signal
Queen Elizabeth II was known for being able to perfectly match her lipstick even without a mirror. But there is said to be more behind the gesture.
Whether it’s a potential horror date or an awkward meeting with family – how often have you and your best colleague agreed on a secret code that you could use to get out of the situation in an emergency? You know – the SOS call, where you unfortunately have to leave immediately.
Admittedly, it works … but unfortunately it’s also pretty obvious. Queen Elizabeth had a far more subtle method.
The Lipstick Code
Ian Scott Hunter, a former servant of the Queen, revealed the secret code: when the monarch touched her lipstick, it was considered a signal. “According to etiquette, it’s not really proper for women to freshen up their make-up in public,” says the former employee. “But the Queen was sending a message to her escorts. She showed that she would now leave the event.” And that pronto. Scott adds: “The ladies in the waiting area quickly packed up and escorted the Queen out.”
Anyone who now thinks that this trick was rather the exception on all the occasions, visits to festivals and events abroad is wrong: there are countless recordings of the Queen (mainly in the stands) in which she touches her lipstick – each with little more enthusiasm Expression. Already in 1977 during a state visit to Fiji the picture above was taken.
The last photo was taken in May 2022. Traditions – whatever they are – have always been a passion of the Queen.
What do you do when you want to quickly disappear somewhere?
