Racing Point throws Perez’s podium after strategic blunder

by archyw

Sergio Perez started the race from a disappointing eleventh place, but his race pace was fine, putting him in fourth place after the first pit stop lap for all the other drivers from midfield.

When the safety car hit the track at the end of the race due to the cars of Max Verstappen and George Russell, Racing Point decided to bring its driver in for a new set of the soft tires.

Behind him, some drivers did not, so that he was overtaken by Daniel Ricciardo and Charles Leclerc. He could not regain those positions and to make matters worse, he was overtaken by Daniil Kvyat in the final phase.

After the Grand Prix, Perez realizes he has missed a podium, but he doesn’t want to be angry with his team. “It is difficult to make the right decision about making a pit stop. Overtaking was very difficult here, so the team must have had good reason to bring it in.”

“I’ll have to talk to them about it”, the Mexican continues opposite Sky Sports. “I think our podium place was in. The team is very disappointed. In retrospect it was the wrong decision, but it is easy to speak afterwards. We win and lose together”, Perez said.
