On 31 January 2019, the agents of the Pau customs brigade control two commercial vehicles on a motorway area. All that is banal except that the visit of the vans shows the presence of fishponds with small translucent fish.
Agents recognize elvers. Not a small catch: the value of this catch: it could represent nearly three million fry with 897 kg seized. In hard currency, it is nearly 500 000 euros.
They also discover in a backpack three wads of notes totaling more than 18 000 €.
During the check, the carriers provide a fishing declaration previously used in December, which is formally forbidden according to the Customs service.
Customs officers then contact the French Biodiversity Agency. It is formal: the glass eels are too young to have been caught during the recovery period on the fishing declaration.
The agents then weighed the beautiful seizure and quickly released the poor fry to give them a chance to become eels.
Rodolphe Gintz, Director General of Customs, "evokes an exceptional quantity of glass eels.Customs remain vigilant and mobilized to fight against poaching in organized bands of international dimension which threatens the survival of this particularly vulnerable species."
A particularly important seizure for the services of the region because it alone is equivalent to 4 findings made in 2018 by the customs of New Aquitaine.
