Renato Sanches (25) will probably go down in the history of FC Bayern Munich as one of the big transfer flops.
In 2016, the German record champions brought the Portuguese into the Bundesliga as the newly crowned European champions, paying 35 million euros to Benfica Lisbon at the time. But Sanches couldn’t convince, was loaned out directly after a year and finally sold to Lille in 2020.
In an interview with the magazine “Views”, the midfield star, who is now under contract with Paris Saint-Germain, spoke about his difficult time at Bayern Munich.
“I chose Bayern because they really wanted me. When a club like that wants you, it’s impossible to say no,” Sanches said of his move to Munich. “The beginning was difficult. I’m going there alone, I was 18 years old and thought I was ready to be alone and up for the challenge. But now I know it wasn’t me. That made me grow.”
Even if the Bayern change missed a negative kink in his career, Sanches does not regret his guest appearance in Munich. “I made the right choice with Bayern, but it was too early,” he said.
Sanches elaborated: “I didn’t expect to go through what I went through, for example an injury in the first training session. I was lonely, I was hurt and it’s not good mentally, especially when you’re young. You may think that you don’t feel the pressure and that you’re fine, but that’s not the case. If you feel the pressure, you will not perform. In that moment, I realized that happiness affects my level of play.”

In Lille, the midfield clearer was able to revive his dormant career, played the focus of the French top club PSG and moved to Paris last summer. However, he still did not make the leap onto the Portuguese World Cup train.
