Renault Austral | Lead

In addition to the sporty off-road coupe Arkana and the classic hatchback reinterpreter Mégane E-Tech, Austral will join as the third lower-middle-class Renault model. The new recreational vehicle, based on the Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-CD platform, is a close relative of Qashqai. The main dimensions (wheelbase, width) of the Japanese and French models are the same, but the concern has made sure there are no differences.

While both cars will be available with a mild hybrid powertrain, Nissan will receive an onboard electric drive and Renault will receive a full hybrid unit (this may change in the future).

The latter is based on a 1.2-liter petrol engine and uses two electric motors: one to charge the 1.7 kWh 400-volt battery, operate the transmission and restart the petrol engine, and the other has nothing to do but drive the wheels.

The transmission uses five gears in hybrid mode and two gears in electric mode. The car accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.8 or 5.9 seconds, depending on total power, and the powertrain in the city can do 80% of its time with the petrol engine off, resulting in a 40 per cent reduction in fuel consumption by Austral: up to 4.6 liters within 100 kilometers.

Also new is the 1.2-liter 48-volt mild hybrid unit, which is being apostrophized by Renault as an alternative to the diesel engine. The three-cylinder engine is smoothed by a balancing axle, the electric motor helps it start and accelerate, and the result is an average diesel consumption of 5.3 liters / 100 km and can be easily adapted to meet the soon-to-be-entered Euro7 emission standards, says the factory.

The line is closed by the 1.3-liter, four-cylinder petrol engine, powered by a simple 12-volt electric motor, with 140 or 160 horsepower. The former with manual or automatic, the latter with automatic transmission only (CVT), with an average consumption of up to 6.2 l / 100km.

A big innovation is Renault’s all-wheel steering system, which can turn the rear wheels 5.0 degrees instead of the previous 3.5. This equips the 451-centimeter recreational vehicle with a turning circle that is one size smaller than 10.1 meters in diameter. At high speeds, the rear wheels turn 1 ° in the same direction as the front ones, resulting in more stable reversals.

Austral uses three displays: a 9.3-inch head-up display, a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, and a 12.0-inch vertical touch screen. The use of the latter is made more comfortable by a padded wrist rest reminiscent of an aircraft throttle arm on the floor console; below it is a cordless phone charging tray.

The 267-centimeter wheelbase also offers a fair amount of space in the rear, though keep in mind that the 457-centimeter Arkana seduces with a 272-centimeter wheelbase, and the new-generation Mégane can add a 269-centimeter wheelbase to its 4.2-meter body length.

Austral is introducing a new level of equipment. Using the name of the Renault Group’s exclusive sports brand, the Esprit Alpine creates a special atmosphere with special colors, large wheels and sophisticated decor details. At this level we also get an upholstered instrument panel, lumbar massage seats and an advanced driver support system.

No less than 32 different functions are available to customers in this area: different levels of parking support, speed and distance control, semi-autonomous driving systems are available. The GPS-based eco-assistant is promised to be an effective consumption reducer, approaching the intersection when approaching an intersection, speed limit or sharp turn to release the gas because it needs to slow down.

The car can be ordered from the waist of 2022, the first copies will be handed over to their owners in the autumn.
