While Renault is preparing the revival of its R5 model in a new incarnation of an electric retrocar, the newly formed company Legende Automobiles decided to capitalize on the image of the legendary “five”. It has French roots, because it was founded by Alain Dérosier, an auto designer who previously worked at Renault, and then had a hand in the creation of the supercar Marc Philipp Gemballa Marsien. In general, Alan is a fan of the Porsche 911, but he did not dare to build a restomod based on this model: the competition is too high. Therefore, for the revival, he chose another legendary car from his childhood – Renault 5 Turbo.
Original Renault 5 Turbo
This is not just a variation of the standard “five”, but in fact a completely different car, created for the homologation of a rally car. The Renault 5 Turbo hatchback had a mid-engine layout, rear-wheel drive and independent suspension, and the production of these cars was carried out by the Alpine company. The 1.4 engine with fuel injection and Garrett turbocharger developed 160 hp. and 221 Nm, which is not bad even by today’s standards. In 1981-1982, 1690 of these hatchbacks Renault 5 Turbo were produced, and from 1982 to 1985, another 3167 copies of the Renault 5 Turbo 2 with a simplified body and interior were made.
Alain Dérozier decided to continue this series, so his restomod is called Legende Turbo 3. He registered his company Legende Automobiles in Los Angeles, because his main partner, the SoCal Frenchiez tuning studio, is located next door in California, and soon he will move there from France and BloodMotorsport company, which is responsible for the technical part of the new restomod.
The partners did not dare to remake the unique mid-engined cars of the eighties, so the Legende Turbo 3 model is built on the basis of the usual “five”, since 5.6 million copies were made of these first-generation hatchbacks. The body is completely redesigned and expanded on the model of the original Turbo cars, almost all external panels are made of carbon fiber, and all new optics are LED.
The engine, as it should be, is installed behind the seats and drives the rear wheels. There are no details about the origin of the technology, it is only stated that the Legende Turbo 3 has a four-cylinder turbo engine with a capacity of 400 hp. Sequential gearbox – with a classic lever and additional gearshift paddles on the steering wheel. The chassis with double wishbones at the front and rear is modeled on the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo racing model. The front axle is fitted with 16-inch wheels, while the rear axle has 17-inch wheels.
The interior, although made in the style of the old “five”, in fact is completely original. It has a virtual instrument cluster and dual-zone climate control, sports seats with four-point belts, and a roll cage. At the same time, the Legende Turbo 3 will still have access to public roads. True, Legende Automobiles has not yet announced either the price, or the circulation of the model, or even the date for the appearance of the first commercial sample.
