Even though the Buffalo Sabers have plenty of wiggle room under the salary cap, they wouldn’t intend to be aggressive in the free agent market, reports The Buffalo News.

The Sabers’ priority would be to hire a veteran to back up goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Branden Holtby’s name was mentioned by The Buffalo News.

The daily adds that there is no reason to woo Stanley Cup winner Darcy Kuemper or Jack Campbell.

Holtby went 10-10-1 with a 2.78 goals-against average and .913 save percentage last season with the Dallas Stars.

Choice time at the Avalanche

A total of 15 unrestricted free agents participated in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Colorado Avalanche and the Tampa Bay Lightning.

According to the specialized website CapFriendlythe Avalanche only have room for maneuver of US$25.6 million if they wish to come to new agreements with Nazem Kadri, Valeri Nichushkin or Kuemper.

There are also restricted free agents, including former Canadiens Artturi Lehkonen.

What kind of contract for Sandin?

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed Timothy Liljegren to a two-year, $2.8 million contract on Monday.

The team still has to come to an agreement with another defender: Rasmus Sandin.

The Maple Leafs, who have 18 under contract for the next season, however, only have room for maneuver of $6.4 million.
