Russia once again challenged the West: it tested the Belgorod, a powerful Russian submarine capable of destroying a city

The Belgorod, the largest submersible built in the last 30 years, sail from this Friday in the waters of Russia.

The submarine, over 180 meters long, has been dubbed the “weapon of the apocalypse” since it was unveiled in 2019. It was launched into the White Sea for its first test sailing.

The ship carries the underwater drone known as “Poseidon”, a nuclear weapon capable of traveling up to 10,000 kilometers at speeds between 110 and 130 kilometers per hour.

The Poseidon could destroy ports and coastal cities. It is designed to operate at a depth of about 1,000 meters and carry a nuclear charge of up to 100 megatons, more than 130 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.

Some experts fear that the ship’s torpedoes can detonate underwater to cause a radioactive tsunami and affect coastal cities with waves almost 100 meters high.

As reported by the British newspaper The Daily Mail, the huge vessel is operated on behalf of Russia’s secret Main Submarine Research Directorate, and it is believed to be central to that country’s intelligence gathering operation.

Submarine commanders will report directly to President Vladimir Putin rather than the country’s top naval commanders, so the Belgorod is considered to be more like a deep-sea intelligence agency than a conventional submarine.

The Black Sea Showdown

The ministry said the Russian warship fired warning shots after British missile destroyer Defender had ignored a warning against intrusion into Russian territorial waters. He said that a Russian Su-24 bomber also dropped bombs in front of the British ship to persuade it to change course.

The HMS Defender “He received a preliminary warning that weapons would be used if the state borders of the Russian Federation were violated. He did not react to the warning ”, said the ministry quoted by the news agency Interfax.

According to the ministry, the incident took place in front of the coast of Cape Fiolent in the Crimea, that Russia annexed Ukraine in 2014.

The Russian Defense Ministry added that “A border patrol boat fired warning shots” and then a Su-24 aircraft daring four bombs along the path of the destroyer.

The ministry said the ship left Russian waters after the shooting.

However, the UK Defense Ministry denied Moscow’s claims, saying the shots were fired during a military exercise Russia was conducting in the area.

The ship of the Royal Navy (Navy) “makes an innocent passage through Ukrainian territorial waters, in accordance with international law “, says a statement from Defense, in London, and stresses that “no warning shots were fired” against the UK destroyer.

“We believe that the Russians were doing some artillery exercises in the Black Sea, and gave the maritime community an advance warning about their activity”, points out the note.

“There were no shots fired at HMS Defender and we do not recognize the claim that bombs were dropped on its path”, added.

The Royal Navy said in early June that HMS Defender had “shed” its strike group conducting NATO operations in the Mediterranean to carry out “its own set of missions” in the Black Sea.

On June 14 Russia reported that the Navy had begun tracking the British destroyer and the frigate Everton of the Dutch Navy after the entry of both ships to the Black Sea.
