BRUSSELS, Feb. 14 – RIA Novosti, Maria Knyazeva. The Nord Stream – 2 gas pipeline will be built, despite the possibility of the entry into force of amendments to the EU Gas Directive, Russian Permanent Representative to the EU Vladimir Chizhov told RIA Novosti.
“There may be different options. But the gas pipeline will be built, you can be sure,” he answered to the question whether it could happen that this directive would take effect before the gas pipeline was put into operation.
Amendments to the EU Gas Directive were agreed on Wednesday night at the negotiations of representatives of the European Parliament, the EU Council and the European Commission. The head of the EP Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) Jerzy Buzek in this regard noted that according to the bill, "all future gas pipelines not from EU countries, including Nord Stream 2, will have to comply with EU rules." Statement of Buzek is given in the message of the European Parliament. At the same time, it is assumed that, under certain conditions, it is possible to provide exceptions for gas pipelines from the rules of the updated EU Gas Directive.
Now the text of the bill will be prepared in all EU languages for final approval by the European Parliament and the Council of EU countries. After being adopted by both lawmakers, the new law should be published in the Official Journal of the Union. The updated directive should then take effect 20 days after such publication. EU countries will have to introduce its rules into national legislation within 9 months.
