“Most UV disinfection systems use germicidal lamps that emit UV C (UVC) radiation around 254 nanometers (nm). However, it is well known that 254 nm UVC is harmful to the skin and eyes ”, the work indicated.
Its authors assured that 222 nm UVC light, belonging to far UVC (207-222 nm), has the same highly effective germicidal properties as 254 nm UVC; but it is less harmful to eyes and skin.
Previous studies concluded that low UVC doses of 222nm inactivated aerosolized H1N1 influenza virus and human coronaviruses alpha HCoV-229E and beta HCoV-OC43.
The authors of this new work also mentioned that UV disinfection in SARS-CoV-2, the effect of 222 nm UVC on SARS-CoV-2 is poorly understood; so they decided to check it out. The results showed that SARS-CoV-2 was reduced by 99.7%, to undetectable levels, after just 30 seconds of exposure.
“Our results suggest that this technology could be used for the prevention and control of Covid-19 infections not only in unoccupied spaces but also in occupied spaces.”, He concluded.
