KOMPAS.com – Coffee is one of the prima donna drinks for many people to open the day.
Unfortunately, despite its many benefits, coffee can also cause health problems, for example in those with reflux disorders.
However, with certain tricks, people with reflux disorders can still enjoy coffee in the morning without having to worry about disturbances around the stomach.

So far we know, people with reflux disorders like Gerd are often triggered by symptoms when they start consuming caffeinated drinks and coffee.
When a Gerd sufferer consumes certain substances, it causes irritation of the lower esophageal sphincter.
The weakness of the lower esophageal sphincter causes the food that has been stored in the stomach to rise back up into the esophagus – or it could be just stomach acid.
Generally coffee has a pH of 5 which makes it acidic.
Nah, foods and drinks with a high acid or fatty content often trigger reflux symptoms, including heartburn.

However, when it comes to coffee, tamarind is not the main cause of heartburn associated with Gerd.
Although many people associate this reflux disorder with the acid present in coffee, some scientists believe the opposite.
Coffee has many components, including chlorogenic acid, catechols, and pyrogallol.
In a previous study on the correlation between heartburn and coffee, scientists neutralized the acid content in coffee.
Surprisingly, it turns out that there are still Gerd sufferers who experience heartburn after drinking coffee.
Their findings suggest that any one of these ingredients may not only trigger heartburn, but a combination could cause an adverse reaction.

The mixing of these compounds creates a chemical reaction, and causes the stomach to produce more acid.
While the acidity of coffee isn’t the main cause of Gerd’s heartburn, lowering the acidity of coffee does help relieve symptoms.
Reducing the acidity of coffee can be done in several steps, namely:
1. Use the method brewing different
Certain brewing methods such as using an espresso machine or french press keep the oil in the coffee which can cause sensitivity and heartburn.
An easy way to fix this is to brew coffee using a filter.
By using a coffee cellulose filter it can be held back so that more oil that triggers symptoms such as stomach ulcers can be held back.

In addition, lowering the temperature of the water when brewing coffee can also help.
The hotter water temperature causes a larger chemical reaction, because it activates more of the oil in the coffee beans. This content then triggers heartburn.
Some scientists also believe that brewing coffee with lower temperature water can reduce the chance of developing heartburn.
2. Low acid coffee
Some coffee roasters reduce the acidity of their coffee by increasing the roasting time.
Well, another way to reduce heartburn is to buy roasted coffee beans that are a bit “burnt”.
This step is believed to remove the wax coating of the coffee until the coffee’s acidity decreases. However, this kind of process usually disrupts the aromatic properties of the coffee beans.

Another way is to use selected beans from plantations which naturally produce coffee beans with lower acidity.
3. Add baking soda
By adding baking soda, we can naturally neutralize the acidity of coffee.
Baking soda generally has a pH of 9, so adding about ¼ teaspoon of baking soda to the coffee grounds will help reduce compounds that can trigger heartburn.
4. Add salt
Like baking soda, salt is also a natural acid neutralizer. When added to coffee grounds before brewing, the amount of acid is reduced.
This is especially useful for removing the tough aftertaste from cheaper coffee beans.
But keep in mind, adding too much salt to the coffee grounds can change the taste of the drink.

So start with a pinch of salt per batch of coffee for optimal results.
Making small changes like changing the method of making or roasting coffee allows us to keep our energy boost from the coffee, without the annoying side effects.
