Ana Uzcátegui | LARA’S PRESS.- The offices of the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration and Aliens are closed for six months (Got) in Venezuela since the pandemic. Lawyers and parliamentarians consider that the measure is a “violation of the identity of Venezuelans“, because they assure that it is not justified that the registries and notaries allow them to work in the week of flexibilization from quarantine, while the roads to process identity cards or passports.
“We are imprisoned, arms tied to have an identity document. The most affected are the children who are waiting for their new identity card and anyone who needs to do a legal procedure and has their identification expired,” said José Gregorio Zaa, lawyer.
The deputy to the National Assembly, Guillermo Palacios, alleges that the government’s intention is also to prevent people from having a passport to solve their immigration problems. “Since the beginning of 2020 the government has been conspiring against the right to identity. This has happened since the price of the new or renewal passport was increased, since its cost is anchored to the petro and is unpayable for a person who earns minimum wage,” he commented.
According to the last adjustment that Saime made to the price of a new passport in June of this year it was 39 million 210 thousand eight bolivars, while the renewal is valued at 19 million 494 thousand 109 bolivars.
For José Gregorio Zaa, the measure also generates concern in those citizens who are waiting for the delivery of a document. “Already the Saime offices when they worked daily presented a lag of attention to the public, which now will get worse,” he commented.
The jurist is also struck by the fact that three months before a parliamentary election, the National Electoral Council has not activated special identification operations. “In recent processes that have been a electoral mega fraud, blitzkrieg operations have been carried out in areas dominated by the PSUV“, he alleged.
