Samsung Electronics has introduced the Odyssey Neo G7, the company’s first non-curved model with a miniLED backlight. It is a 4k monitor with a resolution of 3840×2160 pixels and a refresh rate of 144Hz.

The G70NC contains Quantum Matrix Technology, Samsung’s designation for the use of mini LED backlight. The company reports that this allows for more fine-grained management of the densely packed LEDs, but does not report how many individually dimmable zones the screen has.

The screen has a VA panel, which gives a static contrast ratio of 4250:1. VA panels usually have a higher contract than IPS panels and better black values, although with VA panels the question often arises whether the response times lag behind a bit too much in relative terms. Samsung reports a value of 1ms, but this is the MPRT value and not the gray-to-gray response time.

The monitor has received HDR600 certification from VESA, which means that it has a peak brightness of 600cd/m². This specific label does not impose too many further requirements on the screen, such as a minimum number of dimmable zones. The regular brightness is a maximum of 400cd/m². There is also support for HDR10+ and players can use both DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 connections. There is also built-in support for WiFi and Bluetooth.

Samsung Smart Hub is built into the G70NC, which provides users with a smart TV experience. This makes it possible to start apps such as Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video without having to start the connected PC. The Samsung Gaming Hub is also present, a streaming platform to access games from Xbox and Nvidia’s GeForce Now, but this hub has not yet been released in the Benelux.

Samsung has not yet announced a suggested retail price. The Odyssey Neo G7 would be available worldwide this quarter.
