the san diego flag It consists of three vertical bands, colored from left to right, dark red, white and yellow. The central white band bears the city seal bearing the words “The City of San Diego, State of California, Semper Vigilans.” The Latin motto means “always vigilant”. Under the seal is the number 1542, the year Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the area for the Spanish Empire.
