What are the European Championships and why are they there?

The European Championships 2018 were held in two different cities for the first time. At that time, the European Athletics Championships took place in Berlin, while other sports held their competitions in Glasgow (Scotland). The various associations joined forces to form the European Championships in order to give their sports more attention and TV presence through a kind of mini Olympics. The compact holding of the events within one week makes it easier for fans, journalists and active people to come together for a sports festival.

A total of nine different European Championships will take place in Munich within eleven days. In addition to athletics, medals are also awarded in beach volleyball, climbing, cycling (track and road bikes, BMX), table tennis, gymnastics, canoeing, rowing and triathlon. Where do the individual European championships take place at the European Championships?

The European Athletics Championships will be held in the legendary Munich Olympic Stadium. The walking and marathon competitions take place in downtown Munich. Triathlon, BMX, freestyle and mountain biking are held in the Olympic Park, while the beach volleyball and climbing European Championships take place on the Königsplatz in Munich. The canoeing and rowing competitions will be held at the regatta facility, while the European Table Tennis Championships will be held in the Rudi-Sedlmayer Hall. During the European Championships, a track for the European Track Cycling Championships will be set up in the Munich exhibition center. The European Road Bike Championship leads from the outskirts of Munich to the city centre.

The Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) was pleased that the European Championships can be held in Munich “without new sports facilities being created”, as he said at a press conference 100 days before the start of the Championships.

The competitions take place 50 years after the 1972 Olympic Games on already built grounds. “Gymnastics is in the Olympic Hall, athletics is here in the stadium and rowing is in the original rowing regatta,” said Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD).

What is the schedule of the European Championships in Munich?

The competitions will officially start on Thursday, August 11, 2022 and will end on Sunday, August 21, 2022. The first medals will then be awarded on August 11 in artistic gymnastics. In the first few days, the events will mainly take place in track cycling, gymnastics, BMX freestyle, rowing, climbing and triathlon. What is the motto of European Championships?

This is “Back to the Roofs” and is to be understood as a reference to the striking roof construction of the Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park from 1972. This sports event should therefore go back to the Olympic experience of 50 years ago. However, after the measures against the spread of the corona virus were largely lifted by the federal government in March 2022, the organizers of the European Championships in Munich can plan more freely for the time being. A big advantage of the organizers will be that many sports will take place outdoors. “Hopefully we will have full stadiums, no distance, no masks,” said Marion Schöne, Managing Director of Olympiapark München GmbH, on May 3 at a press conference in Munich, also with a view to the corona pandemic. “Should something change in the situation, we will of course react to it.”

Who came up with the idea for the European Championships?

Marketing experts Marc Jörg and Paul Bristow, who were friends, spent years looking for a project that would help other sports to step out of the shadow of the “king” football. When their concept was in place, they founded the European Championships Management, they cleaned doorsteps at the associations, brought television on board and brought a major sporting event to life.

What is the concept of the European Championships?

It is based on the successful TV conference programs that are known from the winter months. Instead of switching between bobsleigh, figure skating and Nordic combined, for example, people now switch back and forth between rowing, artistic gymnastics and cycling. Parallels to the Olympics are also recognizable, so there is also a higher ranking of nations medals. In Munich, the emphasis is now primarily on sustainability and short distances. How expensive are the European Championships?

According to official information, the budget for the European Championships is 130 million euros, with the city of Munich, the state of Bavaria and the Federal Republic of Germany each contributing a third of 100 million euros. The remaining 30 million euros of the budget should come from the areas of marketing, ticket sales and TV broadcasts.

Is there a mascot for the European Championships?

Yes, a good four months before the start of the European Championships, the organizers announced the winner of a children’s suggestion competition: the squirrel “Gfreidi” in sports trousers and a traditional hat. Children between the ages of three and 13 were allowed to submit suggestions in advance. The winner was an eight-year-old from Nuremberg with her variation of a Bavarian squirrel.

“Gfreidi” is supposed to stand for “Gfrei Di”, which in Bavarian means something like “Rejoice”. The organizers then extended the proposal a bit so that the squirrel only wears a traditional hat with a rainbow tail, plus a sports outfit in the colors and with the logo of the European Championships.

What do the European Championships medals look like?

The medals show the famous tent roof construction of the Olympic Park and, with different shades, make the motto of the European Championships “Back to the Roofs” tangible.
