The special activities began on June 14, declared by the World Health Organization as World Voluntary Blood Donor Day. The donation continues at the hospital, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
The purpose of this special date is to promote the donation and to thank the regular volunteer donors. The Schestakow Hospital, in conjunction with the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and the Argentine Red Cross, San Rafael Branch, carried out different donation campaigns.
Alejandra Galetto, head of the Hemotherapy Service, reported that more than 40 people came to make their voluntary donation.
“The need for blood components and what we can extract from the blood is permanent. The sick do not discriminate if we are in a health emergency or experiencing a pandemic. We always have the treatments that are needed and require transfusions. Although it is true that in this time of pandemic the number of donors has decreased for different reasons, we want to remind you that we always have the need for blood ”.
Galetto remarked that every day of the year and at all times “we have patients who require transfusions and we can only obtain it through people who come to donate.”
“The donation can be made from Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at ALDA’s Clinics, access by Calle Maza 45,” specified the head of the Service.
The strict protocol for protection against COVID-19 is applied, as in the entire hospital, so it ensured that donors can attend with absolute peace of mind. “This place is attended by healthy and healthy people to make this gift of life,” he said.
The requirements are as follows:
-Being of legal age, between 18 and 65 years old,
-Be a healthy person. What is also required is that they attend rested and it was clarified that a light breakfast can be taken prior to the donation.
Donors must attend with the DNI, then their data is corroborated in the Blood System of the province and it is evaluated to determine that they are in good health. A survey (affidavit of health) is completed to select you and all vital signs, such as temperature, blood pressure, and hemoglobin are monitored to rule out anemia.
As for blood collection, it is done with disposable sterile material. “The extraction takes about 10 minutes, his recovery is expected and he is given a snack,” he explained.
Bone Marrow Donor Registry
The Schestakow Hospital, like all the public hospitals in Mendoza, is a recruiter for the Bone Marrow Donor Registry. “This year, the Incucai changed the age for this team and it is up to 40 years. The process is carried out during the blood donation and the procedure consists of completing another form with the patient’s data, addressed to Incucai. While the person is donating, a sample of their blood is taken, not marrow, to later study and match with patients who need marrow.
