Hannover/Bremen (dpa/lni) – In the debate about free hygiene items in schools, according to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Education, there is currently no legal way to finance the items from your own budget. “In Lower Saxony, the school authorities, i.e. the cities and municipalities, are responsible for the procurement of items such as pads or tampons,” the ministry said in a reply.
The ministry also said it was timely and worthy of support to normalize and remove taboos from menstruation. How many schools in Lower Saxony The authority is not aware of exactly testing a free allocation of the articles. According to media reports, there were or are plans in Hanover, Osnabrück and Braunschweig, among others.
In March of this year, the Lower Saxony state student council, i.e. the student interest group, demanded that free menstrual items be provided at all schools in Lower Saxony. The country should pay for the tampons and pads.
In the city Bremen The Bremen education department, which is also responsible for municipal affairs, wants to financially enable all schools in the city to make the articles available free of charge. Implementation should be left to the schools. According to departmental information, a trial lasting several months at seven schools in Bremen produced mostly benevolent reactions.
