Scientific mobilization in Brazil in the face of research precariousness

Idealized by the Brazilian Society for the Progress of Science (SBPC), the movement faces the wrong policies of the government of President Jair Bolsonaro in the sector.

According to the organizers, there will be activities such as classes and online debates with the participation of parliamentarians and representatives of institutions in the scientific area.

A tweet with the hashtag #SOSScience is also planned.

“The objective is to reverse the cuts, as well as seek the release of resources from the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development, the main source of funding for scientific research in the country, and the readjustment of scholarships, frozen since 2013,” said the general secretary of the civil entity, Claudia Linhares.

Likewise, a face-to-face demonstration is scheduled for the day in front of the Ministry of Economy building in Brasilia.

Similarly, the online event “What is the value of Science?” Will take place, which will be broadcast on the YouTube channel of the National Association of Postgraduates (ANPG).

Among the entities that program mobilization actions appear the Brazilian Association of Anthropology, with the debate “Doing science and defending rights: the value of anthropology.”

The Brazilian Federation of Scientific and Academic Communication Associations promotes the debate «Communication, Science and Democracy».

For its part, the Brazilian Society of Nuclear Biosciences will hold a master class given by Maria Paula Curado, researcher in oncology, specialist in Collective Health and professor at the Federal University of Goiás.

This will be the third mobilization of the scientific society to try to stop the fragility of research in the South American giant.

The first was conducted by the SBPC on October 15. During the protest, the entities activated a tweet and the round table “MCTI budget cuts: What is the solution?”

On October 26, the second was completed, which was part of a series of actions organized by the ANPG, with the support of the SBPC and academic and scientific entities.

Bolsonaro is a confessed ruler against science, questioning the efficacy of vaccines against Covid-19.

On more than one occasion, he told supporters that he will be the last to be immunized against the pathogen and defended drugs without scientific proof to treat the disease.
