Scientists at the University of Eastern Finland have said that the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, which is popular in the medical environment, destroys the cells of the body. As it turned out in the course of the research, it damages the genome of the most important cellular structures – mitochondria.
According to scientists, after taking the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, the process of disrupting the production of the organelle DNA, which is responsible for providing the body's cells with energy, is launched. A blockage of growth and cell differentiation was also observed. A side effect of this drug is manifested by the development of tendinitis, which can even lead to tendon rupture. Moreover, an antibiotic can lead to the development of polyneuropathy. This is a severe neurological damage to peripheral nerves, which manifests itself in a whole list of unhealthy symptoms. Scientists believe that fluoroquinolones, which are often prescribed for the treatment of respiratory, otic and urinary infections, have a destructive effect on mitochondrial DNA. At the same time, safer drugs of this type do not exist. The authors of the study believe that the information obtained suggests that antibiotics should not be used unless absolutely necessary.
