The North Rhine-Westphalian CDU chairman and prime minister Armin Laschet described the victory of his party in the NRW local elections as recognition for the “path of measure and middle in the pandemic”. Laschet said on Sunday evening in Düsseldorf that this path “was right, is right and will remain right in the future” for North Rhine-Westphalia.
Many did not expect the CDU to win “on this scale” in a country that had been ruled by the SPD for 50 years. Three years after the state elections, the CDU was “deeply anchored” in NRW, said Laschet. His party has shown that it can win in rural areas as well as in the large metropolises and in the Ruhr area.
