Second FIR against Twitter India MD in Uttar Pradesh; this time on a distorted map of India –

The map shown on the Twitter website shows Ladakh as part of China and Jammu and Kashmir as a separate country.

Uttar Pradesh Police have filed an FIR against two Twitter India officials, Dr Manish Maheshwari and News Partnerships Director Amrita Tripathi, over a distorted map of India displayed on their website. The FIR went to the Khurja Nagar Police Station in the Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh on the basis of a complaint made by an official from the right-wing group Bajrang Dal.

Bajrang Dal Western UP coordinator Praveen Bhati said in his complaint that the world map on the Twitter website does not show Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir as parts of India. He said that the act has hurt the feelings of the indigenous people.

Twitter officials have been booked under section 505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code (public mischief). The charges of section 74 of the Information Technology Act (publication for fraudulent purposes) have also been invoked in the case.

The map shown on the Twitter website shows Ladakh as part of China and Jammu and Kashmir as a separate country. The map was noticed yesterday, sparking a massive uproar on social media with several people demanding a ban on the microblogging site, leading to a #BanTwitterInIndia trend. Twitter removed the map from its website after the uproar.

This is the second time that the CEO of Twitter India has been named on a charge sheet. Previously, an FIR was recorded against Manish Maheshwari in the Loni assault case in which a video of the assault of an elderly Muslim man was shared on Twitter with a religious twist. UP police had claimed there was no hate angle and alleged that Twitter did not label the video as manipulated medium.

Manish Maheshwari had approached the Karnataka High Court after being summoned by UP police and had obtained advance bail in the case.
