Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) has not appeared before the interior committee of the Bundestag, despite the demands of the opposition in particular. An appearance is also not planned later, it said from the committee shortly after the beginning of the meeting on Wednesday. An application to formally summon Seehofer to the committee did not find a majority.
The Greens, the Left and the FDP had demanded information about the circumstances of the dismissal of the President for the Protection of the Constitution, Hans-Georg Maaßen. Seehofer had put Maaßen on a temporary retirement on Monday.
The background was a speech by Maaßens to international secret service employees, in which he had accused parts of the SPD of radical left-wing tendencies and called himself a critic of a "naive and left-wing foreigner and security policy".
