The USA is currently being hit by a “double whammy” of storms, which is leading to sometimes significant disruptions to public life on both coasts of the country. Affected are in western California, in the east the states of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and Vermont.
Severe weather warnings were issued to more than 15 million people in the northeastern United States on Tuesday due to heavy snowstorms and rainfall. The police appealed to the residents of the affected regions not to leave their houses if possible.
People without electricity, flights are cancelled
More than 260,000 homes were without power on Tuesday afternoon (local time) in the states of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. States of emergency have been declared in New York and New Jersey. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul warned that the expected snow will “fall like a brick.” Countless flights were canceled at the airports along the northern coastal regions.
Snow and Flood Warnings in California
On the other side of the United States, flood warnings were in effect across much of California. Heavy rains hit the state on the Pacific coast, which is actually known for its permanent sun, all day long. Evacuation orders were in place for several towns in southern California.
Among other things, parts of the coastal town of Montecito, which is popular with many celebrities, were affected, where, for example, British Prince Harry and his family live.
An unusual amount of snow fell in higher elevations in California.
In view of the simultaneity, the National Weather Service spoke of a storm “double strike”. However, there is no direct connection between the storms.
