Elizabeth II finally announced her visit to the Chelsea Flower Show a few minutes before her arrival
On Tuesday, May 24, 2022, flower lovers can visit the Chelsea Flower Show, a famous horticultural exhibition that attracts thousands of visitors each year, including members of the royal family who have been fans of this fair for decades. Since ascending the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has visited more than 50 editions of this fair organized by the Royal Horticultural Society.
It took more than eleven hours on Monday for Queen Elizabeth II to decide on her presence at the preview of the fair. This Monday morning, his presence was not yet announced. The confirmation fell in the middle of the afternoon, after evaluating the mobility capabilities of the 96-year-old monarch. She had already made a surprise on May 17, by moving to Paddington station to inaugurate the new RER line in her name. His presence was not announced and his son, Prince Edward, was normally responsible for inaugurating it on his behalf.
The Queen visited the flower fair aboard her “Queenmobile”, a cart that allowed her to tour the exhibition pavilions without having to walk or use her cane, which now accompanies her on her outings.
Elizabeth II’s appearances are becoming increasingly rare in London, since she officially designated Windsor Castle as her workplace, in addition to being her residence. The palace has also taken the habit of confirming the presence of the queen only the same day, even a few minutes before the event.

This Monday, the Earl and Countess of Wessex were to be the prominent royals who would inaugurate the fair, open to the public from tomorrow. During the same day, Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi had announced their arrival, as well as the Duke of Kent, cousin of the Queen. Prince Michael of Kent and his wife, as well as Princess Alexandra of Kent, brother and sisters of the Duke of Kent were also present, as were the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester.
This year, a floral arrangement has been specially designed to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who celebrates her 70th reign in 2022. This arrangement is inspired by the gardens of Balmoral, the Queen’s beloved Scottish holiday castle. Elizabeth II’s last visit to the Chelsea Flower Show was in 2019. She was accompanied there by the Duchess of Cambridge, who grants her patronage to the Royal Horticultural Society.
