Shushkevich, the first leader of independent Belarus, dies

Last month, Shushkevich fell ill with Covid-19 and was hospitalized for several days, but his heart stopped beating on the morning of May 4th. This was announced by his wife Irīna.

Shushkevich was a sharp critic of Alexander Lukashenko, the authoritarian leader of Belarus. Even when Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Shushevich condemned Lukashenko for allowing Moscow to use Belarus as a place to gather troops and start a war.

In 1991, a former university professor signed the Białowieża Gara Agreement with Russian President Boris Yeltsin and Ukrainian President Leonid Kravchuk. With this agreement, the leaders of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine recognized the end of the Soviet Union.
