Shuttle is expanding its XPC Slim range with four new DS10 series models. The passive mini PC will also be upgraded to Whiskey Lake processors with two to four cores and a maximum of eight threads. Designed as a fanless barebone, the XPC Slim series promises a low-maintenance 24/7 continuous operation.
The successors to the DS77 series, the Kaby Lake-based fanless 1-liter mini-PCs, complement the DS10U, DS10U3, DS10U5 and DS10U7 family of mini-PCs. Prices start at 284 euros as recommended retail price of the manufacturer.
Celeron, i3, i5 and i7 of the type Whiskey Lake-U
At the heart of the smallest of the four new systems, the DS10U, is an Intel Celeron 4205U with two cores that do not require SMT and operate at 1.8 GHz. The DS10U3, the DS10U5 and the DS10U7 already betrayed by their model designations which processor type was installed.
The three larger representatives of the DS10 series rely on a Core i3-8145U (test) with up to 3.9 GHz, 2 cores and 4 threads as well as 4 MB cache, a Core i5-8265U (3.9 GHz, 4 cores, 8 threads , 6 MB cache) and a Core i7-8565U, which reaches up to 4.6 GHz clock, has 8 MB of cache and thanks to Intel's simultaneous multithreading also works with up to 8 threads. The three larger models have a UHD 620 graphics solution, while the smaller model uses an HD-610 graphics unit.
Passive cooling without fan
The four models in the DS10 series are passively cooled and do not use one fan at all, which makes the XPC Slim model predestined for 24/7 continuous operation due to its low susceptibility to dust. Of course, the user should choose a drive that was also designed and specified for 24/7 operation. Then the mini-PC is also suitable for use "under adverse environmental conditions", Says the Taiwanese manufacturer.
Measuring 200 × 165 × 395 mm (D × W × H), the 1.5-kilogram steel case provides space for a 2.5-inch HDD or SSD drive, an M.2 and two DIMMs. Slots for memory modules of type SO-DIMM and a total of 32 GB DDR4-2400 (PC-19200). A second M.2 slot is already occupied by a WLAN module, which works with IEEE 802.11b / g / n / ac in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz band. On the back, the DS10 series features two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces, two USB 2.0 DisplayPort 1.2 ports, and HDMI 2.0a ports. At the front, a card reader (supports SD, SDHC, SDXC), two USB 2.0 and one USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports as well as two RS-232 ports complete the range of connections.
Prices and availability
The recommended retail price of the manufacturer for the DS10U is 284 euros, the DS10U3 should be available for 533 euros, for the DS10U5 662 euros are called and the DS77U7 beats according to shuttle with 847 euros to book. As with the predecessor DS77 series, a VESA mount and feet are included with the mini PCs.
