Fifa has increased the premiums for the participants of the FIFA World Cup 2018 by twelve percent compared to the previous tournament. The associations split a total of about 344 million euros. The size of their share depends on the performance of the national team.
“This is a positive sign of Fifa’s financial health,” commented Federation Chief Gianni Infantino on the World Association’s willingness to pay. For the Fifa itself, the tournament is worth even more. It expects through the World Cup revenue of two billion euros.
The DFB had some time ago announced that the players should receive 350,000 euros in a successful title defense. In Brazil it was still 300,000 euros. DFB President Reinhard Grindel says to increase: “In Russia, it would be a title for eternity and therefore worth a special premium.”
On reaching the quarter-finals each player gets 75,000 euros, for the semi-final 125,000 euros, for the 3rd place 150,000 euros and 200,000 euros for the final in Moscow on July 15. “However, it is noticeable to the team that this sporting challenge is at the center of attention rather than economic aspects,” said Grindel.
Traditionally, Spain is even more generous: each player would receive 800,000 euros for the World Cup title. In their first title in 2010 in South Africa, the Spaniards had received 600,000 euros. In Brazil it would have been 720,000 euros, but the team was eliminated in the preliminary round.
World record champion Brazil distributes his money in a performance-related manner. The players only receive a bonus when they win the title, the sum is secret. “The team reach the semi-finals, lose there and still get a bonus for it, that’s not in our favor,” said Seleção manager Edu Gaspar.
