Soccer – Freiburg im Breisgau – Despite departures: Finke convinced of Freiburg relegation – Sport

Freiburg (dpa) – Coach legend Volker Finke firmly believes that Bundesliga club SC Freiburg will keep the class in the coming season despite its many well-known departures. “I am sure that the league will succeed. There is still enough substance in the squad,” said the 72-year-old, who coached the Baden from 1991 to 2007, the German press agency. “I also think it’s good that the club, despite eighth place last season, declared no other goal than relegation. That is exactly the right announcement in the current situation.”

With goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow (Hertha BSC) and the national players Robin Koch (Leeds United) and Luca Waldschmidt (Benfica Lisbon), three top performers have already left the sports club this summer. Another could follow with Janik Haberer. “That is of course a shame. After all, they were absolute regulars. And if they had stayed together a little longer, maybe even more would have been possible in the next few years. Also with a view of the new stadium. Something is emerging,” said Finke. “But it has been going on for a long time. It has long been the exception that top performers stay with a club like Freiburg for many years.”

The increasing television money has changed the transfer market tremendously in recent years, said Finke. “Certainly no player has to leave Freiburg because he couldn’t earn enough to live here. But there is always more money somewhere. And as a club, you can’t refuse the redemptions that are sometimes offered.”
