The projections for the cruise segment during the months of November to March continue to reflect a clear growth. Preliminary numbers indicate that during the high season of AF2019-20 around 1,025,704 cruise passengers will be received, a figure that exceeds 918,659 received in the same high season period of AF2018-19, said Carla Campos, executive director of the Tourism Company of Puerto Rico (CTPR).
The estimated economic impact for the local economy is around $ 125,795,135, an increase of over $ 12 million compared to $ 113,770,932 in the previous fiscal year, which responds to a rise in base port cruise operations.
In the winter / spring season, beginning November 26 through April 10, San Juan will welcome six new cruises: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Spirit Discovery, Seven Seas Splendor, Costa Luminosa and Queen Elizabeth, from the Cunard line. The operations of these six ships will represent an impact of $ 10,496,091.26 million to the economy of Puerto Rico. The Norwegian Encore, with a capacity for 5,218 passengers, included the main port of the Island as part of its inaugural travel itinerary and has 20 additional visits scheduled during the rest of the fiscal year.
“We are ready for the high season and the results of the commercial strategy implemented by the Tourism Company with the cruise lines, show its fruits. Over the next five months, we will have over 107,000 additional passengers arriving in Puerto Rico, a record high for the high season, ”said Campos.
"These passengers will arrive in San Juan in a total of 364 trips -24 more than the previous season-, 153 of which will use the port as" homeport "or base port, six more than the previous season," said the head of Tourism .

On the other hand, the port of Ponce will also have tourist activity in the high season, receiving four cruise ships on November 21, January 2, February 13 and March 21.
“Governor Wanda Vázquez Garced has reiterated her commitment to the sector and for these purposes she met personally with the main executives of the cruise lines at the most recent convention of the FCCA (Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association). In turn, the CTPR and the Ports Authority continue to meet with cruise lines to facilitate the creation of new transit routes and "homeport" to all the ports of the Island as well as the increase in view frequencies; making improvements to the infrastructure and strengthening the offer of experiences in and outside the port areas to continue promoting Puerto Rico as a leading destination in the Caribbean, ”concluded the head of Tourism.
