Takashi Iizuka, Sonic’s chief of staff, previously mentioned on several occasions how a “key point” in the history of the Sonic series was its skipping from 2D to 3D. Now, later this year, Sega will take the Sonic the Hedgehog series to new heights with an “open zone” game in Sonic Frontier.

This is a huge change for Sonic that Sega will likely build within the next 10 years, Iizuka noted during a recent interview with GamesBeat. He also used the moment to explain (again) how the first-generation Sonic games were “moving from the side”, and how the second generation was a more modern game (think Sonic Adventures) and Sonic Frontiers is now “next step” with its open-space concept:

“What we are doing now is taking the next step. It’s almost the third generation. We know we’re showing fans something new that might not make sense to them yet.

“But we really wanted to think about where we should take Sonic over the next 10 years. What kind of game should we start building to keep people excited about the future? Sonic Frontiers is the next step in the next 10 years. We hope fans trust us and enjoy it. “We show them. We anticipate when they come to play it and really understand what it’s about.”

Back in 2021, Iizuka described Sonic’s next game (Sonic Frontiers) as a game that “brings forward” modern Sonic games—promising to keep all of Sonic’s notable features, and the fast-paced action that characterized previous modern Sonic games intact. Earlier this week, we also found out that Sonic will take about 20-30 hours to complete, and it’s “easily” twice the amount of supplementation.

Are you looking forward to Sonic’s new outdoor adventure? How do you feel this is the “next step” in the Sonic video game series advancing? Leave your thoughts down.
