Sources: Aaron Rodgers wants to play against Vikings despite an "unusual" knee injury

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers plans to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings despite his knee injury, sources tell ESPN.

"He has a pretty unusual injury that would keep most people out for a while," said a source ESPN.

Rodgers was told this week that his injury could take up to a couple of months to heal, according to another source. The star quarterback has no ligament damage, according to the source, who said the injury was more of a "blunt force compression bend" compression injury.

The Packers want to train Rodgers on Sunday before making the final decision to let him go. The players of the Packers and Vikings played the whole week as if Rodgers were playing.

"He should not have played last week and should not play now, but he probably will," said a source. "There will certainly be a short leash, as it was last week, but we saw what happened."

Rodgers trained on Saturday for the first time since spraining his knee in Green Bay's exciting season opening victory over the knee Chicago bears. Rodgers, who threw three touchdowns in the second half against Chicago, did not train on Wednesday or Thursday – the Packers' two longest on-field sessions – and was considered questionable on Friday.

Unlike most teams, the packers do not practice on Fridays, but host an athletics session on Saturday before a Sunday game. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said on Friday that he would have no problem playing Rodgers, even if he did not train this week.

ESPN's Rob Demovsky contributed to this report.
