Spies: Extra measures not yet necessary due to increased infections | NOW

The number of new coronavirus infections in Alphen aan den Rijn has tripled in the past week compared to the previous week, but according to mayor Liesbeth Spies, it is not yet necessary to take additional measures.

The number of infections in Alphen aan den Rijn has increased in the past week, as in the rest of the Netherlands. It concerns nineteen new infections, while six new infections were reported in the week before.

The GGD confirms that these are not clusters, as was the case before. The infections cannot be linked to one location. Instead, it concerns indoor infections. “The increasing number of infections comes from the family circle and circle of friends. Think of barbecues, parties and birthdays where people are too close to each other.”

However, intervention is not yet necessary, according to the municipality. The mayor does call on Alphenaren to adhere to the measures. “The message that we keep repeating to all Alphen residents is: stick to the measures and keep a distance of 1.5 meters, even when you visit family or friends. Stay at home and get tested in case of complaints.”

Mayor: Alphen aan den Rijn is well prepared for the second wave

Mayor Spies previously announced that Alphen aan den Rijn is well prepared for a possible second wave. “In the event of a new outbreak, the crisis organization that was set up earlier will be strengthened,” says Spies.

The mayor says that Alphen aan den Rijn has learned a lot in recent months from what happened to the municipality during the corona crisis. “We also experienced that many tasks could be picked up quickly. That is why we are convinced that we are well prepared in the event of a new outbreak,” said Spies.

“The virus is really not gone yet and we all want to prevent a new outbreak. I therefore call on everyone to remain vigilant and to follow the rules that still apply as closely as possible.”
