A star with a heart
Ten days after her violent death, the Kenyan long-distance runner Agnes Tirop was buried with great sympathy on Saturday in her former home in Mosoriot. The mourners included Kenya’s 800m world record holder David Rudisha and Uganda’s running star Joshua Cheptegei and his compatriot Peruth Chemutai, both of whom had won Olympic gold in Tokyo.

At the ceremony on Tirop’s 26th birthday, Cheptegei said: “The injustice against female athletes here in Kenya concerns us athletes around the world.” The Kenyan athlete spokeswoman Milcah Chemos, obstacle world champion from 2013, paid tribute to Tirop, who was buried in a white coffin: “We have not only lost a talented person, but a true champion with a big heart, a star not only in our country. “
