Sports Gala Night: Two years later

Due to CoV, there was no Styrian gala night of sports last year – that’s why on Thursday evening in the Helmut-List-Halle in Graz – in addition to prizes for this year – awards for 2021 were also given retrospectively.

Athlete of the Year

The Muaythai boxer Rebecca Hödl was voted Sportswoman of the Year 2022: Among other things, she was awarded bronze for European Championship silver with the discus thrower. She said she was surprised by this award: it is a sign that she is on the right track, says Hödl.

Mountain bike downhill rider Andi Kolb was honored as athlete of the year 2022. Kolb was already European champion this year and also made it onto various other podiums a few times. “I can hardly believe what happened this season. This honor on top of that is of course amazing,” he says.

Cycling Olympic champion Anna Kiesenhofer took home a prize from 2021 – the native of Upper Austria drives for a Styrian team. For the ring gymnast Vinzenz Höck it was already the third sports prize in bronze: This was a confirmation for himself that his performance was noticed and made the three-time World Cup winner extremely happy.

With girl power to the discourse launcher

Coach of the year 2021 was ÖSV ski jumping coach Harry Rodlauer, for 2022 Sturm-Frauen chief supervisor Chris Lang was awarded. Rodlauer thanked the players who “deliver their performance”. Lang emphasized that a coach alone could do nothing. The women’s award went to the successful handball coach Anna Schweighofer.

The Styrian athletes of the last two years were awarded in Graz on Thursday evening. Thai boxer Rebecca Hödl and mountain bike European champion Andreas Kolb were honored for the year 2022.

The sole record holder is and remains the former ski racer Renate Götschl – her five discus throwers are unmatched. Götschl said about the award: “I think the first statue is the one that makes you happiest – that’s a recognition where you realize that you’ve achieved something.”

Paracycler and wheelchair tennis player

Paracycler Tom Frühwirth and wheelchair tennis player Margit Fink, who made it to the gala just in time after breaking a tibia and fibula, were also celebrated. The 20-time state champion said she was proud to take home the award.

Team of the year 2021 are the master volleyball players from UVC Graz. For this year, the stock sport champions from ESV Union Vornholz were able to take the 18-kilogram prize home with them.
