Standoff before Chanhassen ends home with Teen Shot, killed

A 16-year-old boy, described as suicidal, was shot dead by his Carver County MPs after a short break outside his home in Chanhassen.

The teenager was identified by classmates as Archer Amorosi, a lacrosse and footballer who was to begin his junior year at Minnetonka High School. The police said he was swinging weapons at officers.

Deputies answered the house in 6400 block of Oriole Avenue just beside the Hwy. At about ten o'clock, after a woman called 911 to report that her son was suicidal and threatened her with knives and a baseball bat, according to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

When the deputies arrived, they first used a taser before two of them fired their weapons. Amorosi was declared dead at the scene. Body cameras and dash camera video from one of the five answering agencies "may have recorded parts of the incident," according to the BCA, which is now investigating the shooting incident. The two officers involved in the shootings are now on normal administrative leave, and the BCA will hand over their findings to Carver's district attorney's office for review.

In the afternoon, more than a dozen friends and teammates had died in relatives when the investigators set up the crime scene nearby. Many of the teenager's friends huddled together and wept in disbelief.

Reed Greenwood, 16, described Amorosi as loud and energetic, part of the popular crowd at school. Social media photos of Amorosi show a tight young man with long blond hair and a beaming smile.

Two teenagers from Minnetonka High came to pay their respects but did not want to be identified. They described him as a talented athlete and "super fun, nice guy."

One boy questioned the use of force. "They knew about the mental problems," he said. "It is sad that it had to end like this."

On Twitter, fellow students wrote memories of Amorosi and condolences to the family.

"Rip buddy): You deserve better," read a tweet. "Today I lost a brother, long live Archer," read another. Minnetonka High's lacrosse team tweeted, "Just relax, Archer, we'll miss you so much and love you forever."

Emergency Broadcast Audio from the Sheriff Carver County Office revealed how the dispute unfolded quickly.

"Male party has knives and a baseball bat," the 911 dispatcher said about the first call. "Mother says he wants the officials to shoot him."

The dispatcher identified the male as Amorosi. His mother, who called 911, said he had disabled the garage door and locked it in the garage.

"I was there yesterday, Dad said he has some mental health issues," one official replied. "Has this idea that he wants to go out like Bonnie and Clyde."

The officer said that the father did not know firearms on the property except for an Airsoft pistol. An officer warned that the teenager "would also be hostile to prosecution".

After the sound, the officials came and saw the teenager in the living room with "some kind of pistol" in his left hand and a knife in his right hand. Psychic crisis offers were also called into the scene.

Officers formed a perimeter and it was noted that "he is constantly firing a gun in my direction." Amorosi began pacing between the front of the house and the garage door while the deputies discussed how to get the mother out of the garage. The teenager then returned to the living room and alternated between the officers and the garage door. Pepper spray was used.

According to the sound, then came the father of the teenager and was accompanied away. The officers held Amorosi at gunpoint while "having a hatchet and something in his hands."

"Get both parents away from here," another officer said shortly before Amorosi was shot.

"Shots fired, shots fired, ambulance code 3, suspect is dead," said an officer. CPR was performed in the yard on the south side of the house.

Ambulances were called for the mother and an officer who had minor injuries.

One minute later, a respondent replies, "At this point in time, we've stopped the efforts to get a shot," and canceled a call for an ambulance.

Heather Sandahl, who lives two blocks away, saw police approaching the Amorosi house when she left her home at 10:10 to take a Paisley Park tour.

Some officers seemed to remove their pistols from the holsters and put on bullet-proof vests. We went back and asked the officers: are we safe here? "Remembered Sandahl." They said they were not sure, and we left as more squads rushed down the street. "

Only after the tour did she learn what had happened. A friend who had stayed in her house had fallen to the ground when shots rang out, she said.

Hours later, Sandahl waited at the Cub Foods parking lot because she was blocked from her driveway. When she learned that the victim was Amorosi, she leaned forward in tears.

"It's just not fair," she said.

Greg Greenwood, who lives off the scene of the shootings down the street, said he heard two popping noises just before 10:30 while he was in the Caribou parking lot, about a quarter of a mile away.

"I hunt, so I know shots," said Greenwood, whose son visits Reed Minnetonka High. "We have not done much here, and if that happens, it's a big shock."
